Bone by Bone: The prologue to my new thriller

BONE BY BONE: THE PROLOGUE TO MY NEW THRILLER – Recently actor, Nick Rawlinson, (a Spoken Word Publishers Association award winner who appeared in The Bill and Dalziel and Pascoe and is a writer in his own right), read the prologue to the novel I’m working on. It’s a psychological thriller called, Bone by Bone.

Nick did an amazing job – it made the hairs on my arms stand on end! (By the way, he spent some time inside a Dalek too!)

I’m currently reading ‘The Book of Echoes’ by @rosannaamaka @doubledaybooks in preparation for a Q&A with Rosanna at the Bristol Festival of Literature.

It’s a book for our time, narrated by the spirit of a slave woman, as she tells the stories of a girl in Nigeria and a young man from Brixton, showing how the legacy of hate, racism, misogyny, as well as the healing power of love, ripple through the generations.

I read this in #ThinkLikeAMonk, and author, @jayshetty explains, ‘No matter how much we grow, we are never free of daily chores and routines, but to be enlightened is to embrace them. The outside may look the same, but inside you are transformed.’

This is how I feel about becoming and continuing to be a published author.

I’ve now had 13 books published, and as well as editing anthologies, I’ve also contributed to encyclopaedias, books of short stories and poetry anthologies; I’ve written literally hundreds of articles for national newspapers, columns for newspapers and magazines and presented and written documentary scripts for the BBC.

Sometimes I feel successful, sometimes I don’t; sometimes I’m well paid. at other times I’m not; sometimes I’ve won prizes, often I haven’t.

Life goes on. I do my chores. I write. I try not to compare myself to others. It’s hard not to, but I hold on to the idea that my worth has nothing to do with externally perceived success or failure.

We’ve all lost so much, particularly recently. My last psychological thriller, ONE YEAR LATER, is a mediation on grief, prompted by losing my dad, and on losing the person my mum was to dementia. It’s about how grief and emotional abuse echo through the generations unless someone breaks the pattern with love.

It’s also a crime story about who really killed a little girl and who covered it up.

‘Be patient with yourself. Nothing in nature blooms all year.’

After several months of intense #homeschool, we reached the summer holidays and I realised that there would be no childcare, no playdates and no visits or help from family…so I decided there was no point trying and failing to write. Instead I spent time with my daughter and worked on re-wilding our land. I felt guilty for not writing - but then I heard @fearnecotton say this quote on @thebodycoach’s podcast on @bbcradio4.

It’s so true. Now, schools are back, fingers crossed they’ll stay open, and I’m ready to start writing again!

I took this photograph in the Indian summer days at the end of the holidays: I love the way there is beauty in decay as the hydrangea flowers begin to die.
